SM@ART (Sharing Meals at Area Restaurants Together ) Dining is a new program of the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging offered in partnership with local restaurants.  This innovative program takes the senior center congregate meal program into the community, offering it at local restaurants where people want to dine, for a contribution instead of a fee.

SM@ART Dining is not a discount program. It is actually an extension of the traditional CCAAA nutrition program (offered at senior centers). However, in this case, the service is provided at the restaurant using their menu, which has been modified slightly so that it fits nutrition program meal patterns.

At senior centers, participants are limited to one seating at noon on weekdays where everyone gets the same meal. For a lot of reasons, that just doesn’t work for many people. SM@ART Dining will give participants the freedom to choose what restaurant they want to go to and what meal they want to eat on a day and time that suits their schedule. This flexibility will give many more people over 60 in Clearfield County a way to participate in CCAAA nutrition programs.

SM@ART Dining was first offered at the Arrowhead Restaurant, and recently launched at Ethan’s Café and the Dutch Pantry-Clearfield. We recently announced that a fourth locally-owned restaurant has joined the SM@ART Dining Program.  Participants who have SM@ART cards can begin using them at Old Town Road Dairy as early as August 8, 2011.

LuAnn Ireland, owner of the dairy, has worked closely with SM@ART program nutritionist, Sue Kordish, to create combinations of foods that not only feature the restaurant’s favorites, but also incorporate some new additions.  Ireland created a lower-fat chili and a low sodium tuna salad recipe to offer more options for those on restricted diets.  The pair adjusted calorie content in the lighter meals so that each of them leave room for a “Taste of Old Town”  - a mini-scoop of any flavor hard or soft serve ice cream.  The larger dinners do not include ice cream.

SM@ART Dining is available to any Clearfield County resident who is 60 years of age or older, or who is married to someone over 60. People interested in learning more about the program or enrolling, should contact the Agency at 765-2696 to set up an appointment with our staff. Special presentations can be scheduled for groups, clubs and organizations who wish to learn about the program.
